Getting Started with Generative AI

Using ChatGPT

Setting Up a Free and Paid ChatGPT account

Sign up for an account at https://chat.openai.com. A free account allows access to ChatGPT with an underlying GPT-3.5 model, while a paid account, ChatGPT Plus, expands access to GPT-4 and other tools, including plugins.

To sign up for the Plus version of ChatGPT, click "Sign up" at the right window to create an account and subscribe to the paid version of ChatGPT Plus, which automatically includes Advanced Data Analysis. As of January 2024, a subscription costs $20/month. Once logged in, the user can select to use GPT-4 in the upper left corner of the chat interface. he user queries can then be entered in the chat box that appears.  The model will automatically decide when to utilize Advanced Data Analysis based on your promopt; however, you can explicilty ask the model in your prompt to use the tool if you desire. Files can be uploaded by clicking on the +-button in the chat box. Chats 17 and 21 in the paper were produced by entering the described prompts in ChatGPT Advanced Data Analysis. GPT-4 notably has a usage cap (which is currently 40 messages every 3 hours)

You can also select to use GPT-3.5 (this may be desirable for certain prompts or to avoid reaching the time-based limit of GPT-4 messages). And lastly, you can select to use the plug-ins version of ChatGPT which allows access to software created by other users. Popular plug-ins include Wolfram Alpha a tool that improves the ability of the ChatGPT to complete advanced calculations.

Tips for using ChatGPT

Working to refine your prompt can be a helpful way to improve output. Spending time utilizing GPT-4 or GPT-3.5 can build a familiarity and intuition for how to use the tools. Utilizing repetition is also a powerful way to achieve the desired output.

Also do not be afraid to ask ChatGPT to change something in your conversation. It can refer back to previous messages, meaning creating your desired output can be an interative process. The best outputs can often be created this way where you tweak ChatGPT by providing feedback much like you would for reviewing a peer's paper.

Creating a bot requires selecting a name, base model, and a system prompt, which will tell your model how to behave. Additionally, you have the option of editing the temperature (lower values will yield more predictable answers and higher values will increase the randomness yielding "creative" responses). For more advance users, you can use the site to provide access to your own privately hosted bot as well.
